Chapter 4 Recap Assignment

Q any questions prior to submitting your work. After reading the chapter and reviewing the PowerPoint and supplemental readings on the course site, you should complete the following tasks: Answer the questions below. Your responses should be about one, 5 to 7 sentence, paragraph per question set (meaning numbers 1,2,3, etc should be about one paragraph in length.) Your responses should demonstrate a clear engagement and understanding of the course material, critical application of the sociological concepts/theory and should include clear grammar and sentence structure. Please review the assignment rubric under 'Course Resources' for clearer indication of grading distribution and let me know if you have any questions/concerns. Questions: 1. Name a topic that interests you. Now keeping the features of a good research question in mind, come up with three possible research questions you could ask about that topic. What limitations/strengths do you see in you questions? Consider how your 'social location' influenced your choice of topic and the questions you formulated. 2. Explain triangulation with an hypothetical example and discuss its benefits. 3. How would you define alcoholism? Write a brief definition. Based on this conceptualization, describe a method of measurement that would be valid for a study of alcoholism (alcoholism as you define it). Now go to the website of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism and read their definition of an alcohol use disorder (https://www.niaaa.nih.gov/alcohol-health/overview-alcohol-consumption/al... (Links to an external site.)). Is this definition consistent with your definition? What are the “facts” about alcoholism presented by the National Council on Alcohol and Drug Dependence (NCADD) at https://ncaddms.org/?page_id=2388Links to an external site. How is alcoholism conceptualized? Based on this conceptualizing, give an example of one method that would be a valid measurement in a study of alcoholism. Now look at some of the other related links accessible from the NCADD website. What are some of the different conceptualizations of alcoholism that you find? How does the chosen conceptualization affect one’s choice of methods of measurement? 4. Identify three concepts that are of interest to you. You should then conceptualize each of your concepts by identifying three dimensions per concept (total of 9 dimensions). For each concept, identify the level of measurement and briefly discuss why you chose that particular level of measurement for each concept. Please use this link to upload your work. 1.I am interested in the topic of whether standardized tests are fair for underrepresented minority students. It seems like wherever I look in the news right now there is another scandal going on so I've been seeing a lot of different things revolving around the subject. I am interested in seeing whether those who perform higher on these tests actually do better in college. If these tests really serve as a means of who should be accepted into a given university. I think for research it would be good to get different groups of people from a variety of schools around the country. If possible I think it would make the most sense to get people from a wide variety of backgrounds, upbringing, college prestige levels, and race of the students to name a few.
